India Re-Elected to Universal Postal Union Councils
India has been re-elected to the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the 28th UPU Congress held in Dubai. This achievement reflects India’s growing role in global postal cooperation and modernization.
Universal Postal Union (UPU)
The UPU, founded in 1874 under the Treaty of Bern, is a specialized agency of the United Nations. With its headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, it is the second-oldest international organization after the International Telecommunication Union. The UPU connects 192 member nations and ensures a universal postal network.
Governance and Functions
The UPU has four main bodies:
* Congress: Meets every four years to set strategies.
* Council of Administration (CA): Handles policy, legal, and administrative matters between Congress sessions.
* Postal Operations Council (POC): A 48-member technical body driving postal modernization.
* International Bureau: Provides technical and logistical support.
The UPU promotes global postal cooperation, ensures affordable services, supports e-commerce integration, and offers technical assistance and capacity building to members.
India’s Contribution
India has been a UPU member since 1876 and has continuously strengthened the global postal system. Its re-election shows international confidence in India Post’s leadership, reforms, and digital initiatives. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted this as a sign of India’s rising global leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with strong support from External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
Conclusion
India’s re-election to the UPU councils is both an honor and responsibility. It underlines India’s commitment to modern, efficient, and inclusive postal services, reinforcing its role in shaping global postal cooperation and digital transformation.
