India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI)
India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) – A Step Towards a Greener Future
NITI Aayog launched the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) in 2024 to evaluate and guide the performance of Indian States and Union Territories (UTs) in their journey towards electric mobility. It is India’s first national tool to track EV transition and supports the country’s larger climate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
What is IEMI?
The IEMI is a benchmarking framework that scores all Indian States and UTs out of 100, based on 16 indicators grouped under three core themes:
1. Transport Electrification Progress – Tracks EV adoption across passenger, freight, and public transport.
2. Charging Infrastructure Readiness – Evaluates public and private EV charging setups and related policies.
3. EV Research and Innovation Ecosystem – Assesses local manufacturing, R\&D, and technological growth.
Purpose and Features
The main objective of IEMI is to promote healthy competition, policy improvement, and investment planning. It also supports inter-ministerial coordination and helps identify best practices. An interactive dashboard provides real-time insights and comparison among states, making the index more transparent and accessible.
Top Performers and Key Trends (2024)
* Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh were the overall top performers.
* Haryana, Karnataka, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh led in charging infrastructure.
* Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana stood out in innovation and R\&D.
* By 2024, 12 lakh EVs were registered and over 25,000 public charging stations were operational.
* Karnataka had the highest number of installations.
* 29 states/UTs have formal EV policies, with 4 more in draft form.
The India Electric Mobility Index is a powerful tool that aligns state-level efforts with national goals. It not only promotes cleaner transport but also encourages infrastructure growth, innovation, and sustainable development. Through IEMI, India is moving steadily toward a clean, electric, and self-reliant future.
