ICMR-SHINE Initiative: Inspiring Young Health Innovators
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a unique nationwide programme called ICMR-SHINE (Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers). This initiative, held on 7th and 8th August 2025, aims to spark scientific curiosity and inspire students from Classes 9 to 12 to explore careers in health and biomedical research.
Objective and Vision
ICMR-SHINE is aligned with the Prime Minister’s call for students to spend “One Day as a Scientist”. It focuses on creating awareness about the role of science in public health and aims to build a scientific temper among the youth. The event also commemorated the birth anniversary of Dr. V. Ramalingaswami, a pioneer in Indian medical research.
Activities and Participation
More than 13,000 students from over 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories participated in the programme. Activities included guided lab tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations. Students interacted with scientists and technical staff, giving them a real-life experience of the research world. Fun activities like survey and anthropometry games added to the excitement.
Special Highlights
A mascot named Dr. Curio guided the students through the sessions. Short films showcased ICMR’s key achievements such as Covaxin development, the iDRONE initiative, TB elimination, and pandemic preparedness.
The ICMR-SHINE initiative is a powerful step towards shaping India’s future scientific leaders. By connecting young minds with real scientists and research work, it encourages students to view science as dynamic, practical, and impactful. This programme strengthens India’s journey towards a healthier and research-driven future.
