Exposome
The exposome refers to the complete set of exposures an individual experiences throughout life — from conception onward — and how these exposures affect health. According to the International Human Exposome Network (IHEN), it is the integrated compilation of all physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial factors and their interactions that influence disease risk and overall well-being.
Internal Exposures: Includes metabolism, microbiome, hormones, and inflammation.
External Exposures: Includes air pollution, chemicals, diet, lifestyle, and social stressors.
Exposomics: The scientific study of the exposome using biomarkers, advanced ‘omics’ technologies, environmental monitoring, and data analysis to link exposures with diseases.
Significance: Helps identify preventable risk factors and supports better public health strategies and precision medicine.
