El Chichón (Chichonal)

El Chichón (Chichonal) is a highly active stratovolcano located in north-central Chiapas, Mexico. Recent unusual changes observed inside its crater have raised concerns among volcanologists due to its history of violent explosive eruptions.
El Chichón is the youngest volcano in the Chiapanecan Volcanic Arc and lies between the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Central America Volcanic Arc.
The volcano is composed of lava domes and a tuff ring, indicating past explosive activity.
It is among Mexico’s most active volcanoes, with at least 12 major eruptions over the last 8,000 years.
The 1982 eruption was Mexico’s worst modern volcanic disaster,
producing devastating pyroclastic flows and surges.
