El Ashmunein

El Ashmunein (Hermopolis Magna) is an ancient city of Upper Egypt on the west bank of the Nile River.
 • It was a major religious centre dedicated to Thoth and associated with the Ogdoad of Hermopolis.
 • Archaeological remains include the Temple of Thoth, Coptic basilica, houses, cemeteries, and underground galleries from the Late and Roman periods.
