E10 Shinkansen Bullet Train

E10 Shinkansen Bullet Train

India and Japan have announced the introduction of E10 Shinkansen trains for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, marking a milestone in their strategic partnership.

About E10 Shinkansen

The E10 Shinkansen is Japan’s next-generation high-speed bullet train, developed by JR East in collaboration with UK-based design firm Tangerine. It succeeds the E2 and E5 series, featuring enhanced aerodynamics, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort.

Design and Features

Inspired by cherry blossom petals, its aesthetic integrates “Tsugaru Green” and “Evening Elm” shades, reflecting the Tohoku region’s landscape. Key features include:

* L-shaped guides to prevent derailment during earthquakes
* Lateral dampers and advanced brakes for stability and shorter stopping distances
* Blowerless induction motor to reduce maintenance
* Autonomous-ready design with flexible space for cargo
* Two-seat-per-row spacious configuration

India-Japan Collaboration

India will be the first country outside Japan to adopt the E10 Shinkansen. Japan is providing funding, technology, and rolling stock, while India manages execution via NHSRCL. The 508 km corridor uses Shinkansen technology and will launch the E10 trains simultaneously in Japan and India, symbolising their deepening partnership.

Project Progress

Significant milestones include:

* Completion of the first tunnelling phase for the 21-km undersea tunnel between BKC and Thane
* 310 km viaduct completed with rapid progress on bridges, tracks, and stations
* BKC station, 32.5 m underground, designed to support a 95 m tall building above.

The E10 Shinkansen introduction under the MAHSR project not only modernises India’s rail infrastructure but also cements its strategic and technological ties with Japan, paving the way for future high-speed corridors across the country.
