Digital Transformation of the Public Distribution System (PDS)
To enhance transparency and efficiency in delivering subsidised food grains, the Government of India has undertaken major digital initiatives under the Public Distribution System (PDS). These include the *Depot Darpan Portal*, *Anna Mitra Mobile App*, and *Anna Sahayata Grievance Redressal System*, aiming to benefit over 81 crore people under the National Food Security Act.
Key Digital Initiatives
The *Depot Darpan Portal* is a digital tool for self-assessment and performance monitoring of food grain depots. It uses IoT sensors and CCTV for real-time tracking and security, offering a Composite Rating based on infrastructure and operations. This initiative is expected to save nearly ₹275 crore in operational costs.
The *Anna Mitra Mobile App* provides Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealers and Food Inspectors with real-time data. Dealers can view stock and sales, while inspectors conduct geo-tagged inspections. Currently available in four states and in Hindi and English, the app promotes better monitoring and accountability.
*Anna Sahayata* is a grievance redressal platform designed for PMGKAY beneficiaries. It uses WhatsApp and IVRS systems, ensuring accessibility across five states and in multiple languages. The platform focuses on citizen-friendly and responsive complaint handling.
Impact and Future Goals
These measures support the *One Nation One Ration Card* scheme, enhancing food grain portability nationwide. The government has allocated ₹280 crore for the Central Warehousing Corporation and ₹1000 crore for the Food Corporation of India to upgrade infrastructure. Smart warehousing pilots are underway.
Aligned with the Digital India vision, these initiatives aim to build a transparent, tech-driven, and citizen-centric PDS that ensures food and nutritional security for all Indians.
