Cyclone Montha

Cyclone Montha is a tropical storm forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal in late October 2025, expected to make landfall along the east coast of India, particularly affecting Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu.

Formation:

It originated from a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around 24 October 2025. By 26 October, it intensified into a deep depression and was forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to strengthen into a Severe Cyclonic Storm before landfall. Favourable factors included warm sea surface temperatures (>28°C), low vertical wind shear, and ample moisture inflow.

Location and Trajectory:

As of 27 October 2025, Cyclone Montha was located about 350 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), moving north-northwest at 14 km/h. Landfall was expected between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam by the evening of 28 October 2025.

Expected Impact:
Wind speeds: Up to 110 km/h
Sea conditions: “Very rough to high” with possible storm surges in low-lying areas
Regions affected: Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana
Effects: Heavy rainfall, flooding, damage to crops and infrastructure, and disruption to power and communication lines

Preparedness:

IMD and state disaster agencies have issued warnings and initiated evacuation measures. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Naming:

The name “Montha” was given by Thailand, meaning a “fragrant or beautiful flower” in Thai. Cyclone names are approved by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to aid public communication and avoid confusion.
