Chicory
Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an advisory stating that the percentage of chicory content must be prominently displayed on the front of coffee powder packets from 1 July.
Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family and is mainly cultivated in temperate regions.
Widely used in coffee blends to give a darker colour and earthy taste; it is naturally caffeine-free and cheaper than pure coffee.
Contains carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, soluble fiber, and bioactive compounds.
Leaves, flowers, and roots are edible and used in various dishes.
Used as livestock forage and in traditional remedies.
