Caller Name Presentation (CNAP)
Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) is a telecom feature that displays the KYC-verified name of the caller on the recipient’s phone by retrieving details from the telecom operator’s official subscriber database.
Key Points
Government-backed feature to show the caller’s registered name, similar to Truecaller but more accurate.
Uses Customer Application Form (CAF) data submitted during SIM registration.
Helps reduce spam, fraud, and harassment from unknown callers.
To be mandated soon by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Initially works only for same-network calls; cross-network display requires regulatory approval for data-sharing.
TRAI (Feb 2024) recommended CNAP for all smartphones in India.
Ensures greater transparency and caller identity verification in telecom services.
