Bacillus subtilis
Bacillus subtilis is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium commonly found in soil and vegetation. It is non-pathogenic, widely used as a model organism, and valued for its role in antibiotic production and agricultural biocontrol. Kerala has recently declared it the State Microbe.
Motile, facultative aerobe; optimal growth at 25–35°C
Forms highly resistant endospores (heat, UV, desiccation)
Produces subtilin, polymyxin, difficidin, mycobacillin
Used as a Bio-fungicide, plant growth promotion, crop protection
Generally non-pathogenic; opportunistic in immunocompromised
