Android Earthquake Alert System

Android Earthquake Alert System: A Life-Saving Innovation by Google

The Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) System is a smart and low-cost way to warn people before an earthquake hits. Developed by Google and the University of California, Berkeley, it uses Android phones as earthquake detectors.

How the System Works

Each Android phone has an in-built accelerometer, a sensor that detects motion. When this sensor feels an unusual vibration (P-wave), it sends data to Google’s servers. If many nearby phones report similar shaking, the system confirms an earthquake and estimates its location, strength, and impact area. An alert is then sent to users in the area before the more dangerous S-waves arrive, giving 10 to 60 seconds of warning time.

Key Features

* Crowdsourced Data: Uses data from millions of Android phones.
* Two Alert Types:

* *BeAware* – mild shaking
* *TakeAction* – strong shaking
* No Extra Devices Needed: Works with existing smartphones.
* Global Reach: Active in 98 countries, covering over 2.5 billion people.
* Fast Alerts: Helps people take safety steps, stop trains, or evacuate buildings.
* High Accuracy: Performance is similar to national seismic networks.

User Impact

Between 2021–2024, the system detected over 300 earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.9 and 7.8. About 79% of users found the alerts helpful, and 85% confirmed they felt the quake. Many received alerts before shaking began.

The AEA system is a powerful example of using technology for public safety. With no added cost and wide coverage, it helps people stay safer during earthquakes by giving them a few precious seconds to react.
