World Emoji Day

World Emoji Day is celebrated every year on July 17 to recognize and celebrate the use of emojis in digital communication. Emojis—small pictographs used in text messages, social media, and digital chats—have become a universal language that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.

Why July 17?
The date July 17 was chosen because it is the date displayed on the  calendar emoji on most platforms, especially Apple devices. Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia (the emoji reference site), created World Emoji Day in 2014, choosing this date for its visual symbolism.

Purpose and Significance:
Celebrate emoji culture: Emojis have become a major part of how people express emotions, reactions, and ideas online. World Emoji Day highlights their impact on modern communication.

Promote new emoji releases: Tech companies like Apple, Google, and Unicode Consortium often use this day to announce upcoming emoji updates or designs.

Encourage creativity: Social media platforms host events, polls, emoji-themed content, and campaigns where users creatively express themselves using emojis.

Fun Facts:
The Oxford Dictionary chose the  “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji as the Word of the Year in 2015.

Over 3,800 emojis are officially recognized by the Unicode Consortium as of 2024, with new ones added regularly.

World Emoji Day reflects how digital symbols have reshaped the way we connect and communicate globally—making conversations more expressive, fun, and inclusive.
