Warkaris of Pandharpur

The Warkaris of Pandharpur are part of a vibrant devotional tradition in Maharashtra, India, centered around the worship of Lord Vitthal (Vithoba), a form of Lord Krishna. The term “Warkari” literally means “pilgrim”, and these devotees undertake an annual pilgrimage known as the Wari to the town of Pandharpur, especially during the months of Ashadha (June–July) and Kartika (October–November).

Who are the Warkaris?
A devotional sect of the Bhakti movement that emphasizes personal devotion, equality, and community service.

They believe in simple living, non-violence, and compassionate service.

Open to people of all castes and backgrounds, making it a socially inclusive movement.

Core Beliefs and Practices:

Follow teachings of Bhakti saints like:

Sant Dnyaneshwar

Sant Tukaram

Sant Namdev

Sant Eknath

Chant abhangas (devotional songs), often in Marathi.

Emphasis on selfless devotion (bhakti) over ritualism or caste-based hierarchy.

Pandharpur Wari (Pilgrimage):
The most famous event associated with Warkaris.

Millions walk hundreds of kilometers from towns like Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur.

They carry palkhis (palanquins) containing the padukas (sandals) of saints like Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram.

The journey ends on Ashadhi Ekadashi, when the temple town of Pandharpur sees lakhs of pilgrims.

The pilgrimage is marked by singing, dancing, and collective prayers.

Cultural and Social Impact:

Serves as a platform for spiritual unity beyond caste and class barriers.

The movement has deeply influenced Marathi literature, music, and social reform.
