The Kingdom of Eswatini

The Kingdom of Eswatini is a small, landlocked country located in Southern Africa, bordered mainly by South Africa and Mozambique. It covers an area of about 17,364 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 1.2 million people as of 2025.Geographically, Eswatini has diverse landscapes ranging from mountainous regions in the west to lowveld savannas in the east. The climate varies accordingly across these regions.Historically, the Swazi people established their kingdom in the 18th century under Ngwane III. The country was named after King Mswati II, who expanded and unified the territory in the 19th century. Eswatini gained independence from British rule on September 6, 1968, initially named Swaziland, before officially changing to the Kingdom of Eswatini in 2018 to reflect its indigenous name and avoid confusion with Switzerland.Eswatini is an absolute monarchy, one of the last remaining in Africa, ruled by King Mswati III since 1986. The king holds significant power, appointing key government officials and ruling by decree. The monarchy works alongside traditional structures, with the king as the administrative head and the queen mother playing a spiritual and symbolic role. The population primarily consists of ethnic Swazis who speak Swazi (siSwati) and English. The country faces challenges including the highest HIV prevalence rates globally but has been making progress in epidemic control.Administratively, Eswatini has two capitals: Mbabane for administrative and judicial affairs, and Lobamba for legislative matters. The economy is small and largely influenced by its neighbors.
