Why in News?
The 2nd Suru Summer Festival was held in August 2026 to promote Kargil as a sustainable, cultural and adventure tourism destination while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
What is the Suru Summer Festival?
•    The Suru Summer Festival is a tourism and cultural initiative centred on the Suru Valley in Kargil, Ladakh.
•    The festival showcases the valley’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and adventure tourism potential.
•    It brings together local communities, artists, tourism stakeholders, entrepreneurs, visitors and media influencers.
•    The broader objective is to establish Kargil as a leading destination for sustainable, community-based, cultural and adventure tourism.
•    The 2nd edition was held in August 2026, with the festival commencing on August 26, 2026.
Suru Valley
•    Suru Valley is located in Kargil district of Ladakh, around 90 km from Kargil and about 290 km from Srinagar.
•    The valley is known for its lush green summer landscapes, rivers, traditional villages and spectacular Himalayan peaks, including the Nun–Kun massif.
•    It remains a relatively less-explored tourism destination, giving it considerable potential for responsible tourism development.
•    The valley has a distinctive cultural landscape shaped by Purgi communities and a historical interaction between Islamic and Buddhist traditions.
•    Its traditional lifestyle includes agriculture, communal farming, local cuisine and strong community-based hospitality.
Major Features of the 2026 Festival
The festival combined adventure, culture, tourism promotion and community participation through activities such as cycling, paragliding, river rafting, rock climbing, cultural activities and tourism promotions using traditional music, dance, cuisine, handicrafts, attire and local cultural practices.
Focus on Sustainable Tourism
•    The festival seeks to promote tourism without compromising the fragile Himalayan environment.
•    The administration emphasises eco-tourism and responsible tourism alongside increased tourist footfall.
