Notice to Airmen / Notice to Air Missions

NOTAM (Notice to Airmen / Notice to Air Missions) is an official, time-sensitive alert issued by aviation authorities to inform pilots and airlines about important changes or hazards that could affect flight safety. It ensures that all aircraft operators have current, operational information before and during a flight.

Why NOTAM is important Ensures flight safety by warning pilots about hazards. Provides real-time updates on conditions that may not be available in charts or manuals. Helps airlines adjust routes, timings, and operations.

What information does a NOTAM contain? - Typical NOTAMs include updates about: Airport closures or runway repairs Obstacles (cranes, construction works, tall structures) Navigation aids (NAVAIDs) out of service Airspace restrictions (VIP movement, military activity) Weather-related hazards (volcanic ash, storms) Communication equipment issues Drone activity restrictions Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs)

Types of NOTAMs NOTAMN – A new NOTAM NOTAMR – Replacement of an older NOTAM NOTAMC – Cancellation of a NOTAM Additionally: Trigger NOTAM – Alerts pilots to changes in aeronautical information publications. Snowtam – Special NOTAM for runway surface conditions during snow/ice. Ashtam – NOTAM related to volcanic ash.

Who issues NOTAMs? In most countries, NOTAMs are issued by: Civil aviation authorities (e.g., DGCA in India) Air navigation service providers Airport operators They are distributed globally through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) system. How pilots use NOTAMs Before takeoff, pilots and dispatchers review the NOTAMs for: Departure airport Destination airport Alternate airports En-route airspace This allows them to plan safe, efficient flights.
