What is NATO?
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military and political alliance formed in 1949. It was created after World War II to ensure collective security among democratic nations in Europe and North America.
Member Countries
Today, NATO has 32 member countries across Europe and North America.The newest members (as of 2024) are Finland (2023) and Sweden (2024).
Purpose of NATO
1. Collective Defense (Core Principle)
Based on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty:
“An attack on one member is considered an attack on all.”
This is the backbone of NATO’s deterrence strategy.
2. Crisis Management
Conducts military operations, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions.
Examples: operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Libya.
3. Cooperative Security
Works with non-member countries to maintain global stability.
Partnerships include countries in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Why Was NATO Formed?
To counter the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
To prevent future wars in Europe through a unified defense structure.
To promote political unity, democratic values, and collective decision-making.
How NATO Functions
Military Structure
Integrated military command led by:
Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) — traditionally a U.S. general.
Political Structure
Decisions are taken by the North Atlantic Council (NAC) — all members have equal say.
Decisions are unanimous, reflecting collective consent.

1. Deterrence and Defense- Maintains military readiness to prevent attacks.
Includes nuclear deterrence (mainly by the U.S., UK, France).
2. Non-Article 5 Operations
