M.A.N.A.V
Why in News
At the fourth edition of the AI Impact Summit, PM Modi unveiled India's human-centric AI vision—M.A.N.A.V. It positions AI as an extension of human ethics instead of the traditional classification into data or algorithms.
What is MANAV Framework
Representing India's AI vision for the world, the M.A.N.A.V. roadmap ensures AI aligns with societal values. It is backed by policies like the IndiaAI Mission, National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, AI Governance Guidelines, and Semiconductor Mission. This framework focuses on themes like inclusivity, security, and public good through education, infrastructure, and governance.
Pillars of MANAV
• M: Moral & Ethical Systems. AI must root in strong ethics by ensuring fairness, transparency, and human oversight from the start. India embeds these values early in classrooms. The National Education Policy 2020 prioritises digital and AI literacy by integrating computational thinking and ethics, preparing future citizens while fostering an innovation culture.
• A: Accountable Governance. Trust requires transparency, robust oversight, and clear institutional responsibility in AI. The IndiaAI Mission builds this by embedding standards for development and monitoring. AI Governance Guidelines make systems explainable and lawful, aligning them with democratic values.
• N: National Sovereignty. Sovereignty now covers data, algorithms, and infrastructure in an AI world. India secures datasets and builds domestic compute power through the Semiconductor Mission and trusted data frameworks. This fosters indigenous AI models for global collaboration with strategic autonomy.
• A: Accessible & Inclusive. AI acts as a societal multiplier, avoiding monopolies. Digital Public Infrastructure like MeghRaj GI Cloud and IndiaAI Compute Portal shares GPUs/TPUs affordably. IndiaAI Kosh provides datasets, while AI Data Labs Network and National Supercomputing Mission build skills and access for startups and researchers.
• V: Valid & Legitimate. AI must be verifiable, lawful, and safe against threats like deepfakes. IT Amendment Rules 2026 regulate synthetic content. IndiaAI's Safe AI pillar mitigates bias through privacy-preserving designs, algorithmic auditing, and risk frameworks, making innovation credible.
Significance
Ethics guide AI from design to deployment while fostering safeguarded innovation. Sovereignty holds firm amid global competition. Shared resources democratise technology. Regulations combat deepfakes effectively. Principles become actionable steps, building a responsible, inclusive AI ecosystem for society.
