Lithium-ion Batteries
Why in news? Lithium-ion batteries have been identified as a priority segment under India’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme to boost domestic production and reduce import dependence.
Lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move between the anode and cathode through an electrolyte during charge–discharge cycles.
Key features:
• High energy and power density
• Long cycle life
• Low self-discharge
• Lower environmental impact at point of use
Significance for India:
• Enables electric vehicles and renewable energy storage
• Reduces reliance on imported batteries and critical components
• Supports Make in India and clean energy transition
• Helps India achieve greenhouse mitigation targets
