IMO

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. 
It is responsible for safety and security of international shipping, prevention of marine pollution, and handling legal, liability and compensation matters and facilitation of maritime traffic. 
It was established by a UN convention on 6 March 1948.
IMO structure : IMO consists of an Assembly, a Council and five main Committees. 
IMO Assembly : highest governing body consisting of all member nations. It meets once in every two years. 

IMO Council
The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO. It consists of 40 elected members across three categories.
Category (a): 10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services 
Category (b): 10 States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade
Category (c): 20 States not elected under (a) or (b) above with special interests in maritime navigation
India has been re-elected to Category B for the 2026-2027 term.
For the second consecutive biennium, India has secured the highest tally in Category B, reaffirming its commitment to the Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047.
Functions of the council
1.    Coordinate IMO’s various activities.
2.    Submit budget estimate to IMO assembly.
3.    Submit reports and proposals from different Committees to the IMO assembly.
4.    appoint the Secretary-General, subject to the approval of the Assembly;
5.    enter into agreements with other organisation upon assembly’s approval.
