What is Fly Ash?

Current Utilisation Pattern of Fly Ash in India
According to NTPC (2025), fly ash generated during 2024-25 was utilized as follows:
• 32% – Road and flyover construction.
• 27% – Cement industry.
• 14% – Brick and tile manufacturing.
• 11% – Backfilling activities.
• 10% – Mine filling operations.
• 1–2% – Agriculture and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) applications.
These figures demonstrate that infrastructure-related sectors already account for the majority of fly ash utilization in India.
Why is a Dedicated Fly Ash Rail Corridor Needed?
• Fly ash generation centres and consumption centres are often separated by distances ranging from 300 km to 1,500 km.
• Such distances make rail transport the most economical mode for large-scale long-distance movement.
• Existing transportation systems rely heavily on road transport, resulting in higher logistics costs and operational inefficiencies.
• Dedicated rail-based logistics can ensure reliable and uninterrupted supply to industries requiring large volumes of fly ash.
Key Features of the Railway Initiative
• Indian Railways plans to create a dedicated logistics network specifically designed for fly ash movement.
• Specialized containers will be developed to facilitate seamless transfer between rail wagons and road trailers.
• The system is designed to support efficient door-to-door transportation.
• Mechanized loading and unloading facilities will improve operational efficiency.

• This could generate around 1,300–1,400 full rake movements every month, creating a substantial new freight segment.
