CROPIC
The CROPIC initiative, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), is a tech-driven solution for real-time crop monitoring and faster insurance assessment. CROPIC stands for Collection of Real-Time Observations and Photos of Crops. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) and field-based photography to monitor crop health, growth stages, and assess damage.
Farmers and officials will upload 4–5 photos per crop cycle via a dedicated app. These images are processed through an AI-powered platform that applies computer vision to determine crop type, stress levels, and damage. A web dashboard provides real-time visual analytics for decision-makers.
This system aims to automate loss assessment, reducing reliance on manual field surveys. Insurance claims are expedited as verified photos can be submitted directly through the app. Funded by FIAT (Fund for Innovation and Technology) under PMFBY, CROPIC is geared toward innovation-led agricultural governance.
Key benefits include increased transparency, speed, and accuracy in crop damage evaluation, streamlined claim payouts, and empowered farmer participation. By bridging technology with field-level data, CROPIC sets a new standard in responsive, data-driven agricultural insurance.
